Job, Rescued Paint Horse
For additional information, please visit these pages:
Job came to Grateful Acres in February of 2002, just a month after the arrival of Lio, our rescued Shipshewana Belgian. At the time of his arrival, we were not sure if he would live. He was crippled by club feet and starved nearly to death. He could barely even lift his head, much less get up or move around. He was covered with lice and urine burns, he had rain-rot, and his hair was falling out in clumps only to reveal raw, oozing skin underneath.
We fed Job by hand. We bought a dozen foam pillows to prop under his bones to provide som relief from the pressure sores covering his body. We covered him with blankets to help keep him warm and hung St. Francis medals throughout his stall. (St. Francis is the patron saint of animals.) Despite all this, there were times when we feared Job would not last another hour. Were we doing the right thing trying to save an animal who was suffering so much and was already so far gone?
Thanks to the prayers of Grateful Acres supporters and the financial help of Job's sponsor, we are happy to report that Job pulled through! It was a long road, and Job still contends with some lingering physical problems. But, he is a happy, healthy, gorgeous horse with a personality that defies description. Visitors are immediately drawn to his gentle, silly, affectionate soul. Upon viewing pictures kept in a binder near Job's stall, some have actually wept to think what this unfortunate horse went through. But Job's days of suffering are through, and today there is no question that Job enjoys his life. Thanks to the skills of our very talented farrier, Job's club feet are now growing normally and he is as mobile as any horse, kicking and bucking happily like a normal youngster.
